Frequently Asked Questions

What is hybrit turf?

hybrid lexically means; of mixed character; composed of different elements.. So,  the genetic combination of different varieties of  grass is called hybrit. A hybrid turf is the  genetic combination of different varieties.

Each variety  in nature has its own weaknesses and strengths. The turfs’s strenghts such as salty water tolerance and shade durability is examined in a laboratuary and as a result different varieties are mixed according to the needs.

Presently there has been a confusion regarding the  meaning of hybrit because some applications are presented as hybrit. For example, that the use of gas+electricity in cars is presented as hybrit causes confusion. The hybrit turf is defined as the combination of natural grass with synthetic turf . This leads a great misunderstanding (confusion)  regarding  the meaning of hybrit turfgrass. For example; Tifway 419 is a  hybrit Bermudagrass. It is the genetic combination of Cynodon dactylon and C.transvaalen germplasma.

What is hydro sprigging?

Hydro sprigging is the use of  stolons (sprigs) instead of seed in a slurry of fertilizer and mulch which is mixed in a tank. The mixture is sprayed with a hose over a target area.

Is there a special variety of grass which can be irrigated by salty water and which is appropriate to the coastel area?

Yes, there is.  SeaSpray ( Paspalum Vaginatum) and SeaDwarf (Paspalum Vaginatum). In Turkey  and in Northern Cyprus, only the Çimser Turf Production Industry and Commerce Joint Stock Company, has been lisensed to produce and sell them.  They can also be produced by international firms who have been lisensed by the Environmental Turf Company.  Both of These varieties can be used as turfgrass.

Which Turf is the best for heavy –foot- traffic and wear?

All grass varieties produced by the Çimser Turf Production Joint Stock Company are appropriate to heavy-foot-traffic and wear.  Tifway 419 has been the most popular sports turf, especially for football pitches.  It is  also one of the most durable hybrid Bermudas. It can be applied as rollgrass.

Can turf be laid all year round?

Yes. The rollgrass can be laid any time throughout the year on condition that there is no rains and frost.

Can everybody lay a turf?

It is easy if the ground levelling is done properly. But it is better  to get a professional help.

What are the pros and cons between turf and seed?

The turf is produced from lisensed original sprigs(stolons) by applying  regular maintanence by professionals using Professional product and equipment. After a regular 8-month maintanence, it can be harvested and laid out in your garden.
Seeds used in seeding applications usually are the mixtures which belong to certain firms. But sometimes they can not have enough seeds ‘ germination.Besides, due to the wrong maintenance the grass starts  drying out.  The patches of brown dying grass becomes patches of bare soil.  Although seeding seems cheaper than sod in fact it is more expensive than laying turf.  Because the after-seeding maintenance costs more than turf.
In the case of turf, the first installation risks  and costs are eliminated when it has been brought to your garden. In a couple of hours, it makes your garden green and also  it meets the quality expectations  of your aesthetic appeal. When compared with seeding method we see that due to insufficient knowledge of  seed, application, maintenance ,equipment and time the expected results can not be achieved. The quality is lower than the turf.

What are the important points in l turf laying out?

The ground should be watered and have a reasonable amount of underlay levelled by a roller. The site levels and drainage should be checked. The soil should be 3-4 cm lower than a path, flower-bed or ceramic covered grounds if any. 10% of subsidence of the  wetted soil should be taking into consideration. After finishing the structural work, turf should be laid out ensuring the roots of the sod have good contact with the soil.  Laying should start from the corners and the edges of roll pieces should contact each other  3-4 cm above the surface of the soil and  should be pressed against the soil. After completion of  every installation of 50 square meters, turf should be watered.

What are the important points in turf watering?

Soil moisture is important for irrigation. Grass dry out in dry soil. It is necessary to moisten the soil into the depth of 15cm. To do this, you can use a 15cm-long wooden stick . Put the stick into the soil and wait for a while. Then pull the stick. If the 5cm of the stick is dry, water the turf.  If not, do not water. After applying this method for a couple of times, you can get some idea about your soil texture and structure and can arrange your watering frequencies accordingly. Before sun rising and during sunsetting times are ideal for watering. Also, early morning is the best time to water. You can water your garden either using a   sprinkler or an automatic irrigation system. In this way you ensure regular and sufficient watering. Early morning irrigation is the best time of the day. It is better not to water in the late hours following the sunset.  As the turf produced by Çimser is  high –drought- tolerant, the soil sould be dry at watering intervals. Free watering is not ideal. When watering with a hose, do not stay in one position; do not water the same place .It may cause erosion. If your turf is not a salty-water-tolerant variety and if your watering water is salty,  every five days you can use either city water supply or water tank to lower the percentage of salt. In this way you ensure your turf durability .

What is the best preferable soil texture and structure to lay out turf?

The  ideal soil depth for low-maintanence and healty turf is minimum 10 cm. However; turfs having better development, disease-resistance, drought-tolerance and resistance to other negative conditions need thin roots to reach depth which should be 15cm. Some soil has heavy clay content and compressed. As a result, roots can not have air and water. So root-growth is insufficient. Some soils are very sandy. It is not ideal for turf because it does not retain water long enough for the roots to get its vitamins and nutrutive elements and to germinate. Sandy loam is best for growing turf.
